Nonword repetition and sequential memory in children aged 7-12 and adults – differential effects of bilingualism ; developmental language disorders ; and the role of development
Reid; Heather. - : McGill University, 2019
Abstract: Tests of nonword repetition (NWR) are valuable tools for identifying Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in preschool and early school-age children ; monolingual and bilingual. Two new tests for older children were examined: The TRepLo ; using longer nonwords with manipulation of word-likeness ; and the TRIC ; testing memory for verbal stimuli without a verbal response. In experiment 1 ; three age groups of monolingual French speakers were tested: children in grade 3 (n=12) ; grade 6 (n=11) ; and adults (n=14) to examine developmental effects. In experiment 2 ; the performance 14 bilingual children and 13 monolingual children with DLD ; each matched on age to children from experiment 1. Analyses included overall score ; score by item length ; by word-likeness manipulations ; and analysis of error types. The diagnostic accuracy of the tests was investigated.Experiment 1: Correlations between age and overall accuracy on the TRepLo ; the TRIC and the EVIP were found ; however children’s performance on the TRepLo and the TRIC did not differ between ages 8 to 12. Word-likeness had a facilitative effect for all groups. Experiment 2: Bilingual and monolingual children did not differ significantly on overall scores. Children with DLD differed significantly on overall TRepLo scores ; but performed similarly to age-matched peers on the TRIC. The TRepLo had the best sensitivity and specificity of the tests investigated. Conclusions: Improvement in NWR accuracy for very long stimuli continues past the late school-age period. In this population ; the TRepLo shows potential as a tool to differentiate children with DLD from children with typical development ; even in a bilingual context. The TRIC sheds light on some processes in children with DLD that do not differ significantly from typically developing children.
